Samsung’s Artik development boards are finally reaching hands of consumers in the US. The Artik development boards which were unveiled back in May 2015 at the IoT World 2015 have taken quite a lot of time to become consumer ready and take over the likes of the new Raspberry Pi 3, Pine 64,etc which have revolutionized the DIY Maker community with the “PC ona board” concept. And now, the Artik 10- the most powerful board from the Artik series is all set to intensify the ongoing competition. Priced at $150, which is more than what one would pay for 4 $35 priced Raspberry Pis, Samsung will sure have to do a lot to of work to impress the buyers and build a community around it.

To provide developers a basic cloud service for their IoT, Samsung have even gone to lengths of relaunching SAMI with a new name called Artik Cloud which was announced at the recent Samsung Developers Conference, San Francisco.

Artik 10

The Artik 10 features a 32 bit Octacore Exynos 5433 SOC which is composed of a quadcore low power ARM Cortex A-7 cluster and the high performance ARM Cortex A-15 cluster based on ARM’s big.LITTLE architecture.A 16GB of flash storage and 2GB of RAM is onboard the Artik 10. It also features a MALI T628 MP6 GPU capable of playing back HD videos at upto 120fps and also supports displays with 1920x1080p resolution with refresh rates of upto 60Hz making it a really capable board for multimedia based projects. Being a development board requires to have multiple connectivity options and the Artik 10 has a whole lot of those like WiFi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, GPIO, UART, TTL, 3 USB ports (including one USB 3.0 port), MIPI, SPI, I2C, I2S, etc. (You can get the complete list here).

The Artik 10 can run on Fedora, Snappy Ubuntu Core and Tizen OS and has support for C/C++, Java, JavaScript and Python development environments. Once the platform goes mainstream, community builds can hopefully harness the full power of that Octacore CPU for stuffs like gaming, VR, multimedia,etc making it more than just another IoT based development tool.
